New Delhi, 11th July 2023: In a remarkable demonstration of the strong bilateral relations between India and France, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to undertake a visit to Paris on July 13-14. This visit holds great significance, given France’s longstanding role as a crucial defence partner for India.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will be the esteemed Guest of Honour at France’s renowned Bastille Day Parade, a prestigious event that showcases the rich history and military prowess of France. The invitation extended to Prime Minister Modi reflects the deepening ties between the two nations and highlights the importance of their strategic partnership.
One of the key highlights of the visit is the expected announcement of important agreements between India and France. Among these anticipated agreements is the procurement of 26 Rafale-M aircraft for the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant, as well as a submarine deal.
India has been eagerly awaiting the acquisition of aircraft for the indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant. It is reported that the Defence Procurement Board recently approved the decision to procure 26 naval versions of the Rafale aircraft, including 4 trainer aircraft. The official announcement of this procurement is expected during Prime Minister Modi’s visit to France. This move reinforces India’s commitment to enhancing its naval capabilities and strengthening its defence infrastructure.
In addition to the Rafale-M aircraft procurement, there is also significant focus on the submarine project under Project 75. The Indian Navy is expected to acquire three Scorpene-class submarines under the repeat clause, further bolstering India’s submarine fleet. This acquisition is vital for addressing India’s current submarine shortfall and ensuring maritime security in the region.
Furthermore, discussions are expected to take place on potential collaborations in the development of aircraft engines for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA). Both countries are exploring opportunities to collaborate on engine development, which would be crucial for powering India’s indigenous fighter aircraft.
The visit also provides an opportunity for discussions on various other areas of cooperation, including the Jaitapur nuclear power plant project. India and France have been engaging in extensive dialogue on nuclear energy, and the Jaitapur project holds significant importance for both nations.
Additionally, the visit highlights the strong defence ties between India and France. The Indian Armed Forces will proudly march alongside their French counterparts during the Bastille Day Parade. A tri-services contingent consisting of 269 members from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force will participate in the parade, showcasing the close military cooperation between the two nations.
