President Droupadi Murmu Receives Report on OBC Reservation System Inequalities

New Delhi, 1st August 2023: President Droupadi Murmu has finally received the long-awaited report from the Rohini Commission, which was appointed to investigate the sub-categorization of Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The formation of the Commission for Other Backward Classes was initiated following an October 2017 notification with the objective of examining the sub-categorization of OBCs. The commission, chaired by Justice G Rohini, a retired chief justice of the Delhi High Court, was entrusted with this critical task.

After thirteen extensions, the commission has now submitted its comprehensive report to President Droupadi Murmu, as stated by the Social Justice Ministry.

The primary responsibilities of the Commission involved a thorough examination of the entries in the Central List of OBCs. The commission aimed to identify and rectify any instances of repetitions, ambiguities, inconsistencies, spelling errors, or transcription errors present in the list. Furthermore, it was tasked with analyzing the distribution of reservation benefits among OBCs to address any disparities and inequities. The commission worked diligently to devise a scientific approach, incorporating mechanisms, criteria, norms, and parameters for the sub-categorization within the OBCs.

The report submitted by the Rohini Commission is anticipated to shed light on the existing inequalities within the OBC reservation system and provide valuable insights to address the disparities effectively. The findings of the commission are likely to play a pivotal role in refining the OBC reservation policy, ensuring equitable distribution of benefits among various sub-groups within the OBC community. The President’s receipt of the report marks a significant step towards achieving social justice and inclusivity for all communities in India.
