PM Narendra Modi Inaugurates Indian Textiles and Crafts Repository Portal on National Handloom Day

New Delhi, August 7, 2023: In a significant move to promote India’s rich heritage of textiles and crafts, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the Indian Textiles and Crafts Repository Portal on Monday. The launch took place during the National Handloom Day celebrations at Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam. In his address, PM Modi emphasized the cultural and economic significance of India’s handloom tradition and urged citizens to embrace and support locally-made products.

The event was held at Bharat Mandapam, a newly inaugurated venue that blends India’s ancient heritage with modern aspects, symbolizing the country’s evolving identity. PM Modi highlighted that the Swadeshi movement was initiated on this historic day, leading the government to designate it as National Handloom Day.

Expressing his concern, PM Modi noted that after India’s independence, insufficient attention was given to strengthening the textile industry, particularly Khadi, which had thrived for centuries. He underscored the need to restore the reputation of Khadi, as its wearers were unfairly associated with inferiority. Revitalizing the textile sector, he emphasized, is crucial for the nation’s progress.

PM Modi acknowledged the rise of the “neo-middle class” and the opportunities it presents for textile companies. He reiterated the nation’s collective aspiration to eliminate corruption, dynasty politics, and appeasement politics from the system.

The newly launched e-portal, titled the Repository of Textiles and Crafts, was developed by the National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT). Its aim is to showcase the diverse and intricate artistry of Indian textiles and crafts, preserving and promoting the cultural legacy.

The National Handloom Day celebration witnessed the participation of over 3000 handloom weavers, khadi artisans, and stakeholders from the textile and MSME sectors. This collective effort underlines the significance of supporting and sustaining these traditional industries, ensuring their continued growth and prosperity in India.
