The ruling stems from a complaint filed by Mohammed Musliyar, a resident of Malappuram district, who was involved in an accident on June 30, 2021. Despite the severity of the collision and resultant injuries, the airbag in Musliyar’s Maruti car did not deploy, raising questions about the vehicle’s safety features.

A subsequent investigation, including the examination by a motor vehicle inspector, confirmed the allegations of the faulty airbag. In light of these findings, the Consumer Commission took decisive action, ordering Maruti Suzuki to refund the customer a sum of Rs 4,35,854, equivalent to the vehicle’s value. An additional Rs 20,000 was mandated as litigation cost.

The Commission, in its ruling, emphasized the urgency of compliance. If Maruti Suzuki fails to adhere to the order within a month, a 9 percent interest rate will be imposed on the refund amount.
