Legal Debate Unfolds: IVF Controversy Surrounds Sidhu Moose Wala’s Mother

A recent IVF case involving the late Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala’s parents has sparked a legal debate, raising questions about the permissibility of the procedure for older women. The Union Health Ministry has expressed concerns regarding the IVF treatment received by Moose Wala’s mother, who gave birth at the age of 58, well beyond the permissible age range for such procedures.

The controversy emerged when it was revealed that Moose Wala’s parents opted for IVF to conceive their second child, following the tragic loss of their son nearly two years ago. The Ministry, upon learning of this case through a newspaper article, highlighted the age limit specified for women undergoing IVF treatment, which typically ranges from 21 to 50 years.

In response to the Ministry’s concerns, the Punjab government has been called upon to provide a detailed report on the IVF treatment administered to Moose Wala’s mother, Charan Kaur. Meanwhile, Moose Wala’s father, Balkaur Singh, has accused the government of harassment, alleging requests for documentation to verify the legality of the new child.

Citing Section 21(g) of the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021, the Health Ministry reiterated the age limit stipulated for women seeking ART services. They have urged the Punjab government to conduct a thorough investigation into the matter and submit a comprehensive report detailing the actions taken in accordance with the provisions of the ART (Regulation) Act, 2021.
