In a groundbreaking move on Friday, February 16, 2024, the Agra Railway Division introduced the ‘Kavach’ automatic braking system in an eight-car Vande Bharat train. This cutting-edge safety feature, designed to prevent collisions, autonomously engages brakes if the locomotive pilot fails to act in any circumstance.
The inaugural trial, spanning between Mathura and Palwal from 9:30 AM to 2:00 PM, showcased the system’s prowess. Even without manual intervention from the pilots, the train, traveling at 160 Kmph, came to a halt 10 meters before a red signal, demonstrating the effectiveness of the Kavach system.
Prashasti Srivastava, Agra Railway Division PRO, stated, “The parameters derived from this trial will now be standardized for all eight-car Vande Bharat trains nationwide.”
Developed by the Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), the Kavach system is set to elevate operational safety by intervening during emergencies when a locomotive pilot fails to respond promptly. As part of a comprehensive safety overhaul, Indian Railways is implementing three essential components across its network: station Kavach, RFID tags spanning the track’s length, and Kavach towers lining the routes.
