Indian Coast Guard Rescues 182 Pilgrims Stranded on Grounded Ferry During Ganga Sagar Mela

Kolkata: In a commendable display of prompt action, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully executed a rescue mission today, evacuating 182 pilgrims stranded on the grounded ferry, ‘Swasthya Sathi,’ off Kakdwip in West Bengal. The incident unfolded during the ferry’s journey from the Ganga Sagar Mela at Sagar Island to Kakdwip, where it ran aground due to extremely poor visibility.

The ICG, responding swiftly to a distress call from the District Magistrate, South 24 Parganas, deployed two Air Cushion Vehicles (Hovercrafts) from Haldia and Sagar Island for the rescue operation. With precision and expertise, the hovercrafts efficiently evacuated the stranded pilgrims and ensured the safe relocation of the remaining passengers and the ferry to a secure destination.

In anticipation of the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, the ICG had strategically positioned sea-borne units at various locations to guarantee the safety of participants. A rapid lifesaving action team, equipped with a Gemini boat, was stationed at the Mela site to respond to unforeseen events. Furthermore, an officer from the ICG Ship Frazerganj was posted at Sagar Island to coordinate with the state administration and oversee safety aspects along the seafront.

This successful rescue operation underscores the Indian Coast Guard’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of maritime activities, particularly during significant events like the Ganga Sagar Mela. The swift response and coordinated efforts of the ICG exemplify their dedication to safeguarding lives and maintaining maritime security.
