Indian Airlines Encouraged to Self-Regulate Airfares for Passenger Welfare, Says Aviation Minister

The central government, in response to concerns about rising airfares, has disclosed in Parliament the steps taken for the welfare of air passengers. According to the information shared in the Lok Sabha, the number of air passengers has seen a significant increase to approximately 14 crore in the last nine years. Additionally, the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has engaged in discussions with airlines to address concerns related to airfares.

Union Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia, in response to a written question in the Lok Sabha, revealed that airlines have been advised to prioritize the interests of passengers when determining airfares. He acknowledged that airfares are influenced by market dynamics, demand, seasons, and other factors. The surge in demand for flights has contributed to the increase in airfares. In response, the ministry has engaged in dialogues with airlines, urging them to consider passenger interests in their fare-setting decisions.

Scindia emphasized that airlines are committed to ensuring that airfares remain stable, especially during incidents like natural calamities or other emergencies. Globally, many countries have moved away from regulating their aviation sectors, removing government-imposed restrictions and fare controls on airlines. This non-regulation has intensified competition in the airline industry, making it more accessible for new players to enter the market.
