India Takes a Stand: 10 Foods Banned by FSSAI Due to Health Risks

India’s commitment to ensuring food safety and standards is underscored by the vigilant efforts of the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). Over the years, FSSAI has identified and prohibited several food items deemed hazardous to health. Here’s an overview of 10 such banned foods and the rationale behind their prohibition:

1. Chinese Milk and Milk Products:

  • In 2008, FSSAI banned Chinese milk and milk products due to the presence of melamine, a toxic chemical added to artificially boost protein levels. Melamine ingestion poses severe health risks, prompting India to outlaw the import and sale of these products.

2. Artificial Fruit Ripening Agents:

  • Chemicals like calcium carbide and ethylene gas, used to hasten fruit ripening, are prohibited due to their carcinogenic properties. FSSAI’s ban aims to safeguard consumers from the health hazards associated with artificially ripened fruits.

3. Chinese Garlic:

  • High pesticide levels in Chinese garlic prompted its ban in 2019. Excessive pesticide use poses health risks, including cancer. India’s prohibition aims to shield consumers from the dangers of contaminated garlic.

4. Energy Drinks:

  • Certain energy drinks faced FSSAI bans owing to their excessive caffeine content. While some brands reformulated their ingredients to comply with regulations, concerns persist regarding the health impacts of excessive consumption.

5. Sassafras Oil:

9. Brominated Vegetable Oil (BVO):

  • BVO, an additive in citrus-flavored drinks, contains bromine, posing health hazards that led to its ban in India.

10. Rabbit Meat:

  • Due to cultural and religious sensitivities, rabbit meat is not permitted for sale or consumption in India.
