In response to the existing shortage of 10,000 to 12,000 employees in the Income Tax Department, Nitin Gupta, the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), has declared that measures are underway to fill these vacant positions. The initiative aims to enhance the department’s operational efficiency and meet the growing demands of taxpayers.
As part of the interim budget discussions, Gupta hinted at potential relief for taxpayers, particularly in the form of withdrawing demands for pending taxes up to Rs 25,000. This announcement is expected to bring respite to individuals who have received notices for outstanding tax amounts lingering for over a year.
Gupta specifically emphasized the shortage in the Group ‘C’ category, constituting a significant portion of the vacant positions in the Income Tax Department. The ongoing efforts to address this personnel deficit reflect the department’s commitment to streamlining its workforce for more effective tax administration.
Currently boasting approximately 55,000 employees, the Income Tax Department recognizes the importance of filling these vacancies to maintain a robust and responsive system. The forthcoming recruitment drive aims to bring in skilled professionals to enhance the department’s capabilities in handling tax-related matters.
Taxpayers, especially those facing pending tax demands, are keenly anticipating the potential relief measures, as the Income Tax Department strives to strike a balance between fulfilling manpower requirements and addressing the concerns of the public.
