ICAR-CCARI Goa’s ‘Nutmeg Taffy’ Invention Secures Patent, Promises Prosperity for Farmers

Innovative Solution Maximizes Utilization of Nutmeg By-Product, Offers Economic Boost to Farmers

Goa, India – The Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Central Coastal Agricultural Research Institute (ICAR-CCARI) in Goa achieves a significant milestone as its groundbreaking invention, “Process for preparing Nutmeg Taffy and resultant food product thereof,” receives patent approval (Patent No. 528119, Application No. 201621012414, dated 8th April, 2016). Spearheaded by Dr. A. R. Desai and the research team, this invention holds immense promise for the agricultural sector, particularly nutmeg farmers, by unlocking the potential of nutmeg pericarp as a valuable resource.

Nutmeg, a cornerstone spice crop in India prized for its seeds and mace, often leaves behind the nutrient-rich nutmeg pericarp after harvest. Recognizing the untapped value of this by-product, ICAR-CCARI Goa developed Nutmeg Pericarp Taffy, a novel product with significant nutritional content. This innovative taffy, comprising 80-85% of the fruit by fresh weight, offers a sustainable and shelf-stable solution without the need for synthetic preservatives, ensuring convenience and affordability.

Farmers stand to reap substantial benefits from this invention, with an estimated additional annual income of Rs. 5,600 per tree, complementing their traditional nutmeg spice yields. The simplicity of the production process, along with its low equipment requirements and commercial viability, makes it accessible to a wide range of stakeholders, from agri-entrepreneurs to small-scale food industries.

Successful technology transfer and commercialization partnerships with M/s Tanshikar Spice Farm, Netravali, Goa, and the Goa State Biodiversity Board signify a pivotal step towards leveraging agricultural innovation for socio-economic development. The Institute Technology Management Unit of ICAR-CCARI Goa played a crucial role in facilitating the patent application process, underscoring the institute’s dedication to promoting innovation and technology dissemination in the agricultural domain
