Historic Connectivity: Agra Metro’s Jama Masjid to Taj Mahal Stretch Completes Tunneling

In a groundbreaking development for Agra’s transportation infrastructure, the tunnelling work for the Agra Metro, linking the eastern gate of the Taj Mahal to Jama Masjid, has achieved completion. This crucial underground section underwent successful testing on December 30, marking a significant milestone in the Agra Metro project. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate this six-kilometer section at the end of February.

Transformative Metro Line:

The Agra Metro line, spanning a total length of 30 kilometers, is a transformative project poised to reshape the city’s urban transport landscape. The priority section, covering 3 kilometers of elevated track and an equivalent underground stretch, has been completed in a remarkable 11-month timeframe.

This swift completion is especially noteworthy considering that the construction of underground metro stations and tunneling typically requires three times the duration of elevated stations.

Exceptional Coordination and Effort:

The Agra Metro project achieved this feat, including tunnel construction through Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), track work, laying the entire third rail, and implementing signaling systems to ensure smooth and safe train operations. Sushil Kumar, Managing Director of the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC), highlighted the exceptional coordination and effort of various teams, including civil, track, traction, signaling, E&M, and telecom.

Upcoming Milestones:

UPMRC announced that train testing will commence over the entire priority stretch, which is gearing up for public access soon. Systems and signaling work are slated for completion by the next month, further paving the way for the metro’s full-fledged operation. The Agra Metro, once operational, is poised to enhance connectivity, providing a convenient travel experience for both locals and tourists visiting iconic landmarks like the Taj Mahal and other historic sites in the city.
