Himachal Pradesh Tourism Sector Faces Challenges Amid Ongoing Heavy Rains and IMD Advisory

IMD Alert

Shimla, India, 30th July 2023: The tourism sector in Himachal Pradesh is grappling with difficulties amidst the ongoing heavy rains and the recent advisory from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) warning about landslides and flood-like situations in the state. In response to the situation, Cabinet Minister Vikramaditya Singh has extended a video message to tourists, assuring them that the necessary infrastructure damaged during the monsoon season has been restored through the tireless efforts of the government, including Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu and his team.

“The tourism sector has faced significant challenges, but our diligent efforts have been focused on restoring normalcy. I want to assure all tourists that Himachal Pradesh is now safe for you to explore and enjoy its abundant natural beauty,” Singh emphasized.

However, it is crucial to note that the IMD has issued a highway weather advisory until August 4, warning against travel to seven districts of the state due to the threat of landslides and floods. Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected until August 2. The advisory specifically highlights the Kalka-Shimla, Shimla-Kalpa, Kalpa-Kaza, Swarghat-Kullu, and Kullu-Keylong highways, which witness a significant influx of tourists.

Considering the current situation, the IMD advises travellers to avoid unnecessary travel and adhere to guidelines issued by relevant departments. Safety should be a top priority, and tourists must take adequate precautions.

The heavy rains have taken a toll on the tourism sector, and various establishments such as hotels, guest houses, and homestays are facing an uncertain future. Restoration of roads, water, and electricity may take considerable time, impacting the overall tourist experience.

Despite the challenges, the government and local authorities are actively working towards resolving the issues caused by the rains and ensuring a safe and pleasant experience for tourists visiting Himachal Pradesh. Visitors are encouraged to stay informed about weather conditions, follow official advisories, and exercise caution while exploring the state’s breathtaking landscapes during this monsoon season.
