Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti 2024: Honoring the 352nd Birth Anniversary of the Tenth Sikh Guru

The Sikh community and people from diverse backgrounds join hands in commemorating the 352nd birth anniversary of Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the revered tenth Guru of Sikhism. This auspicious day, known as Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti, falls on January 17 and is marked with fervor, spiritual reflections, and acts of selfless service.

Born on the Saptami Tithi of Shukla Paksha in 1723 Samvat, as per the Hindu Calendar, Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s multifaceted contributions as a poet, philosopher, spiritual leader, and warrior resonate through the pages of Sikh history. He played a pivotal role by founding the Khalsa Sikh warrior community and introducing the five Ks, which symbolize the articles of faith worn by Khalsa Sikhs.

Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is not merely a Sikh celebration; it is a global acknowledgment of the teachings and path laid down by Guru Gobind Singh Ji. The day is dedicated to embracing and propagating his ideals, emphasizing principles of equality, justice, and selflessness.

The celebration involves visits to Gurudwaras, where special prayers, hymns, and religious discourses echo the revered Khalsa Vani, “Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh.” Community meals, known as Langars, are offered to everyone, fostering a spirit of unity and togetherness.

Guru Gobind Singh Ji, born in Patna, Bihar, on December 22, 1666, faced challenging times following the martyrdom of his father, Guru Tegh Bahadur, at the hands of Aurangzeb. Proclaimed as the tenth Guru at the age of nine, Guru Gobind Singh continued his father’s legacy by founding the Khalsa Panth and instilling spiritual discipline among its followers.

Before his passing in 1708, Guru Gobind Singh declared Guru Granth Sahib as the permanent Guru for the Sikh community, emphasizing the continuity of spiritual guidance. Guru Gobind Singh Jayanti is an occasion to pay homage to this great Guru and renew the commitment to equality and service to humanity.
