Futuristic Security: Bengaluru Airport Leads with CTX Machines to Redefine Travel Experience

In a major leap toward enhancing airport security and passenger convenience, Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) is all set to initiate a trial run for the CTX (Computer Tomography X-ray) machine at Terminal 2 (T2). This groundbreaking development aims to eliminate the need for passengers to remove laptops, tablets, and electronic devices from their handbags during security checks.

The trial run for the CTX machine at T2 is scheduled to commence within the next few weeks, making KIA the first airport in India to introduce passenger trials for this advanced technology. Integrated with the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS) and full-body scanners, the CTX machine promises to revolutionize the security screening process.

According to Satyaki Raghunath, Chief Operating Officer of BIAL, three full-body scanners have been deployed at T2 to ensure a faster and more secure flying experience. The CTX machine, with its advanced screening capabilities and automatic explosives detection algorithms, is poised to significantly improve security outcomes with superior 3D image quality.

The introduction of this system is initially aimed at domestic passengers and is anticipated to be fully operational by December 2023. The implementation of CT technology will allow operators to rotate views and examine bag contents, reducing the need for re-checks and physical inspections. Passengers can leave electronic items and liquids in their bags, expediting the screening process and minimizing contact points, thereby improving hygiene.

The CTX Proof of Concept (POC) is currently undergoing trials at T2, with installation and integration with ATRS lanes in progress. Passenger trials will commence shortly, marking a milestone in Indian aviation security.

Kempegowda International Airport’s Terminal 2, designed as a “terminal in a garden,” incorporates green spaces and sustainable features. Inaugurated in November 2022, T2 commenced domestic operations on January 15, 2023, and international flight operations on September 12, 2023.
