Fast-Track to Modernization: Indian Railways’ Bold Move to Transform Mail-Express Trains

Indian Railways, a cornerstone of the nation’s transportation system, is set to undergo a transformative upgrade, bringing the Mail-Express trains up to par with the advanced Vande Bharat Express. This ambitious initiative aims to not only elevate the speed and efficiency of these trains but also ensure a safer and more comfortable journey for passengers.

Key Highlights of the Upgrade:

  1. Increased Speed and Efficiency: Mail-Express trains will soon operate at speeds of up to 160 kilometers per hour, a substantial improvement from the current maximum speed of 110 kilometers per hour of the older ICF coaches.
  2. Transition to Vande Bharat Coaches: The old ICF coaches, known for their heavy iron construction, are being replaced with modern stainless steel coaches similar to those used in the Vande Bharat Express, enhancing speed, safety, and durability.
  3. Improved Safety Features: The upgraded coaches will feature automatic doors, akin to metro trains, enhancing passenger safety by opening only when the train comes to a halt.
  4. Manufacturing Base: The traditional manufacturing of ICF coaches in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, will be phased out in favor of the new Vande Bharat coaches, ushering in a new era of passenger train travel in India.
  5. Cost and Capacity Benefits: The Vande Bharat coaches are anticipated to be more cost-effective and potentially offer more seating capacity compared to the older ICF coaches, which were heavier and costlier to maintain.
  6. Safety and Durability: The new coaches are designed to mitigate risks during accidents, ensuring a safer travel experience compared to the older ICF coaches.

Implementation Timeline: With approximately 40,000 ICF coaches currently in operation, the transition to Vande Bharat standards is expected to span four to five years.

As Indian Railways charts a course towards a more modern and efficient rail network, passengers can anticipate a significant enhancement in their travel experience with the upcoming upgrade of Mail-Express trains.
