Evalanche Strikes Sonamarg on Srinagar-Leh Highway; Authorities Take Preventive Measures

In a concerning incident on Thursday, 8th February 2024, a substantial avalanche struck the Sonamarg area on the Srinagar-Leh Highway, near the workshop of the Zojila tunnel construction. Despite the severity of the avalanche, there have been no reported casualties or damage.

The incident unfolded amid heavy snowfall, prompting authorities to issue precautionary orders for the higher reaches of the Kashmir valley. On the preceding Wednesday, the minimum temperature in most places across the valley remained several degrees below freezing.

They are urging residents and travelers to refrain from venturing into avalanche-prone zones for the next 24 hours.
