Enhanced Security Measures: NPS Implements Two-Factor Aadhaar Authentication from April 1

Strengthened Security: Two-Factor Aadhaar Authentication Rolled Out for NPS Logins

The Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA) has announced the implementation of a new security protocol within the National Pension System (NPS), effective April 1, 2024.

This latest framework entails a two-factor authentication system, leveraging Aadhaar, which is now obligatory for all password-based users accessing the Central Recordkeeping Agency (CRA) system. The PFRDA made this announcement via a circular released on March 15, 2024.

According to the notification, the aim is to “enhance the security measures in accessing the CRA system and safeguard the interests of subscribers and stakeholders.” This entails integrating Aadhaar-based authentication with the existing user ID and password-based login process, thereby instituting a 2 Factor Authentication system.

Until March 31, nodal offices within central and state governments, as well as autonomous bodies managing pension affairs, were required to use password-based login methods for NPS transactions. However, effective immediately, users will need to undergo Aadhaar-based authentication for login purposes.

Under this new system, user IDs of nodal offices within the government sector will be permitted to access the CRA system using 2-Factor Authentication via Aadhaar OTP (One-time password). The process mandates that Oversight Offices (PrAO/DTA) and PAO/DTO link their Aadhaar with their respective CRA User IDs, facilitating Aadhaar Mapping and linking for underlying users and DDOs, respectively.

Step By Step Guide To Use Aadhaar Authentication:

  1. Visit the NPS website: https://enps.nsdl.com/eNPS/NationalPensionSystem.html
  2. Click on ‘Login with PRAIN/IPIN’
  3. Select the PRAIN/IPIN tab to open a new window
  4. Enter your user ID and password
  5. Complete the Captcha verification
  6. Authenticate using Aadhaar by providing your registered mobile number to receive an OTP
  7. Enter the OTP received
  8. Access your NPS account

It’s crucial for users to note that with the new two-factor Aadhaar authentication system, the NPS CRA will deny access to an account if an incorrect password is entered five consecutive times, leading to an account lockout. However, users can still reset the password by answering the secret question even after the account has been locked.
