In a significant win for animal welfare, leading e-commerce platforms Amazon India, Meesho, Flipkart, Snapdeal, and JioMart have united in removing listings for glue traps from their websites. This collective action follows an impassioned appeal from PETA India, advocating for the cessation of these traps known for causing prolonged suffering to small animals ensnared within them.
The decision to delist glue traps comes in the wake of a ban imposed on them across 32 states and union territories in India, a milestone achieved through persistent advocacy efforts by PETA India. JioMart, the retail arm of Reliance Retail, has gone a step further by discontinuing offline sales of glue traps across its extensive network of over 16,000 stores nationwide.
The dire plight of wildlife, encompassing birds, snakes, mice, rats, and squirrels, trapped in these adhesive-laden contraptions is nothing short of heart-rending. Struggling in vain, often resorting to self-harm, these animals endure excruciating suffering before meeting their demise due to shock, dehydration, or blood loss. Not only are glue traps inherently cruel, but they also prove ineffective in addressing the underlying issue of pest control.
PETA India is now calling upon other prominent retailers such as BigBasket and IndiaMART to follow suit and halt the sale and promotion of glue traps. Additionally, they urge the public to join the advocacy movement by pressuring any remaining retailers to discontinue the availability of these inhumane products.
The slow and agonizing deaths inflicted upon animals ensnared in glue traps evoke scenes of terror, panic, and agony, underscoring the urgent need for widespread action to end this barbaric practice.
