E-Commerce Boom: South India’s Festive Season Sparks 400,000 New Gig Jobs

As the festive season draws near, South India is gearing up for a surge in gig job opportunities within the e-commerce sector, as projected by TeamLease Services, a prominent staffing solutions provider. Leveraging insights from industry research, market sentiment, and job openings, TeamLease anticipates the creation of 400,000 fresh gig jobs across South Indian cities. The majority of this demand is expected to be concentrated in Bengaluru (40%), followed closely by Chennai (30%) and Hyderabad (30%).

While the demand for gig workers during the festive season will undoubtedly remain high in tier-1 cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Chennai, it will also extend to tier-2 and tier-3 cities such as Coimbatore, Kochi, and Mysore. Companies will be actively recruiting for key roles, including Warehouse Operations (30%), Last-Mile Delivery Personnel (60%), and Call Center Operators (10%).

Mr. Balasubramanian A, Vice President, and Business Head at Teamlease Services, shed light on the escalating demand, stating, “Over the last quarter, several prominent e-commerce players have unveiled their ambitious plans for this festive season. The positive growth dynamics in the sector are driven by shifts in consumer demographics, the government’s Make in India initiative, foreign direct investment (FDI), increased digitization, and other factors. All of these factors are significantly influencing India’s gig economy. Compared to last year, we anticipate a 25% increase in gig jobs across India. The South is leading the way and is poised to witness some fascinating trends. Specifically, gig jobs in the South have increased by 30% compared to last year.”

The outlook for the upcoming festive season is highly favorable, reflecting the industry’s robust growth outlook, the increased spending potential of Indian consumers, and a general expansion of the consumer base in India. According to industry research, consumer spending in India is projected to surpass $4 trillion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 10%. Furthermore, the gross merchandise value (GMV) of the overall e-commerce and e-tail ecosystem has surged by 22% to reach US$ 60 billion in FY2023. These factors are poised to further bolster India’s gig economy. Industry reports also suggest that India’s gig workforce is expected to reach 2.35 crore by 2029-30, underscoring the escalating demand for this talent pool.

Overall, on a nationwide scale, a staggering 700,000 new gig jobs will be generated. This job expansion isn’t limited to the e-commerce sector alone; industries such as retail, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), and logistics are also expected to witness a surge in employment opportunities.
