Decoding Train Mileage: How Much Diesel Powers the Indian Railways?

How Much Diesel Does It Take?

The Indian Railways operates a diverse fleet of locomotives, each with varying fuel consumption patterns. Let’s delve into the specifics of how much diesel it takes to propel a train for a kilometre.

For instance, a standard passenger train consisting of 12 coaches requires a mere 6 litres of fuel to cover a kilometre. Surprisingly, even a larger superfast train with 24 coaches also consumes the same amount, indicating a consistent mileage of one kilometre per 6 litres of diesel. On the other hand, an express train with 12 coaches is even more fuel-efficient, needing only 4.5 litres per kilometre for its operation.

Contrary to common belief, no train in the Indian Railways system currently achieves a mileage of one kilometre per litre of diesel. The efficiency is measured based on the type of train, number of coaches, and operational requirements.

Influence of Coaches and Train Type on Mileage:

The number of coaches or compartments in a train plays a pivotal role in determining its mileage. Trains with fewer compartments impose a lighter load on the engine, resulting in reduced fuel consumption.

Additionally, the type of train significantly impacts its fuel efficiency. Passenger trains tend to burn fuel more rapidly than express or superfast trains. The reason lies in the frequent stops made by passenger trains at short intervals along their routes. These stops limit the locomotive’s ability to attain high speeds, leading to increased usage of the accelerator and brakes. Consequently, fuel consumption rises, and mileage decreases.

In contrast, express and superfast trains, with fewer stops, offer higher mileage. The ability to maintain consistent speeds for longer durations contributes to their enhanced fuel efficiency.
