Cyclone Michaung Update: IMD Warns of Heavy Rains in Tamil Nadu Till December 6

In a recent announcement, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Tamil Nadu till December 6 due to the intensification of Cyclone Michaung in the Bay of Bengal. The weather agency predicts isolated heavy rainfall in north coastal Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Rayalaseema on December 2 and 3.

The forecast extends to coastal Andhra Pradesh, with heavy to very heavy rainfall expected from December 3-5. Additionally, regions such as north coastal Tamil Nadu, south Odisha, south coastal Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, and Telangana may experience heavy rainfall on various dates from December 4-6.

Fishermen have been advised to exercise caution, with the Met Department warning against venturing into select parts of the Bay of Bengal due to squally winds and gale speeds reaching up to 90 kmph.

Thunderstorms with lightning are also anticipated in several areas, including east Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, Karaikal, and Mahe on December 2. The weather conditions are expected to persist, affecting Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and Karaikal on subsequent days.

Cyclone Michaung Latest: The low-pressure system evolving in the Bay of Bengal has escalated into a ‘depression’ and is forecasted to intensify further into a ‘cyclonic storm.’ The system is expected to reach the northern Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh coasts by December 4 evening, with the cyclone projected to make landfall between Nellore and Machilipatnam on December 5.

Vishakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre Managing Director Sunanda highlighted, “The low-pressure area has now intensified into a depression near the southeast and adjoining neighborhood areas of the Bay of Bengal. So, in the next 24 hours, it will further intensify into a deep depression. Then, in the next 24 hours, it will intensify into a cyclonic storm. While intensifying, it is moving in a northwest direction and will reach near the North Tamil Nadu Andhra coast.”
