Chennai Metro Rail Project Gains Momentum: Rs 12,000 Crore Allocated for Phase II Expansion

In a significant move towards enhancing urban mobility and connectivity, Tamil Nadu Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu unveiled the state budget for the fiscal year 2024-2025, allocating a substantial Rs 12,000 crore for the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project. This strategic investment aims to bolster infrastructure, foster economic growth, and elevate the overall living standards within the region.

Key Highlights of the Budget:

  • Metro Rail Expansion: The major highlight of the budget is the allocation of Rs 12,000 crore for the implementation of the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project. Covering over 116 kilometers, this expansion is expected to significantly enhance the city’s public transportation network.
  • Urban Road Modernization: A noteworthy portion of Rs 2,500 crore has been earmarked for the modernization of 4,457 kilometers of urban roads. This investment underscores the state’s commitment to improving the overall infrastructure and mobility within cities.
  • Infrastructure Development: The budget outlines a comprehensive plan for infrastructure development, reflecting the government’s focus on creating a sustainable and efficient urban environment. This includes initiatives to bolster education, social welfare, and cultural preservation.

  • Upcoming Projects: The second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail project, spanning 116 kilometers and costing Rs 63,246 crore, is already underway. The completion of the Poonamallee to Kodambakkam stretch is anticipated by December 2025. Additionally, detailed project reports for upcoming corridors, such as Airport-Kilambakkam, Poonamallee to Parandur, and Koyambedu to Avadi, are in progress.
  • Iconic Structure Near Chennai Central: A landmark development includes the construction of a 27-story iconic structure, with heritage design elements, near Chennai Central Railway Station. Costing an estimated Rs 688 crore, this project, in collaboration with CMRL and TIDCO, will house commercial, public sector, and IT offices.
