Beware of Deception: Sachin Tendulkar Falls Victim to Deepfake Video, Sparks Government Action

Former Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar has found himself targeted by deepfake technology, with a video promoting a betting app featuring him circulating on social media. Tendulkar shared the video on his X account, expressing concern about the potential misuse of technology and urging followers to be vigilant against deceptive content.

In the video, Tendulkar is seen endorsing a betting app named ‘Skyward Aviator Quest’ and falsely claiming that his daughter is profiting from the game. The cricket legend clarified that the video is fake and designed to mislead people. He called on his followers to promptly report such misleading content to prevent its spread.

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship in India, retweeted Tendulkar’s post, cautioning people to be wary and avoid falling for deceptive deepfake videos. Chandrasekhar highlighted the threat posed by the misuse of artificial intelligence-powered deepfakes and misinformation, emphasizing that it jeopardizes the security and trust of Indian users, violating laws that platforms are obligated to uphold.

Chandrashekhar further announced that the government is set to introduce stringent rules under the IT Act soon. These rules aim to ensure platform compliance in addressing the proliferation of deepfakes and misinformation. The objective is to enhance user security and foster trust in digital platforms by curbing the dissemination of deceptive content.

The incident involving Sachin Tendulkar adds to a growing list of celebrities who have fallen victim to deepfake technology in recent months.
