Bengaluru Water Crisis: Karnataka Government Caps Tariffs to Alleviate Burden on Residents

In response to the alarming water scarcity in Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has taken decisive action by implementing tariff regulations for private water tanker operators. The move is aimed at curbing overcharging and ensuring fair access to water for citizens grappling with severe shortages in the city.

Bengaluru Urban Deputy Commissioner Dayananda KA issued the tariff structure on March 6, following recommendations from the technical advisory committee. The new rates, categorized based on distance and capacity, seek to establish a fair and transparent pricing mechanism to alleviate the burden on residents.

New Rates:

  • 6,000L – Rs 600 up to 5km & Rs 750 for 5-10km
  • 8,000L – Rs 700 up to 5km & Rs 850 for 5-10km
  • 12,000L – Rs 1,000 up to 5km Rs 1,200 for 5-10km

For distances within 5 km, rates range from Rs 600 to Rs 1,000 for tanker capacities of 6,000, 8,000, and 12,000 liters, respectively. Beyond 5 km up to 10 km, the rates increase slightly to Rs 750, Rs 850, and Rs 1,200 for the corresponding capacities. All prices include GST.

To further address the concerns raised by private tanker operators, bulk water customers, such as residential complexes and commercial establishments, have specific rates for hiring tankers (excluding water).

Transport department officials have already taken stringent actions, seizing 163 private water tankers in Bengaluru since March 2. Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar emphasized the state’s commitment to taking over unregistered tankers if not registered with the BBMP by March 7.

Despite protests from private tanker operators, who argued for higher rates, the government stands firm in its dedication to ensuring fair pricing and accessible water for all citizens, especially amid the escalating water crisis in Bengaluru’s outer regions.
