Bengaluru Leverages AI to Tackle Traffic Woes: Innovative Measures for Decongestion

In a bid to combat traffic congestion, Bengaluru, ranked sixth among the most congested cities globally in 2023, is taking a technological leap with the implementation of AI-based traffic management solutions.

Bengaluru’s traffic police have initiated the use of data from 33 major tech parks and aggregators to enhance traffic management. The city plans to expand the deployment of AI-based cameras from the current 50 junctions to cover 500 junctions, creating a more comprehensive and efficient traffic monitoring network.

The introduction of Japanese ‘MODERATO’ technology in adaptive traffic signals is a key aspect of this initiative. Initially covering 28 major junctions, these signals dynamically adjust signal durations based on real-time vehicular flow. Under testing, this adaptive system aims to reduce congestion, minimize delays, and improve travel time efficiency by up to 30%.

The Directorate of Urban Land Transport oversees the project, with a full-scale deployment expected by March 2024. Additionally, half of the existing traffic signals in the city will be upgraded to adaptive ones within the next 6-8 months, further contributing to streamlined traffic flow.

The Adaptive Traffic Signalling Control System (ATSCS) will not only enhance traffic management but also focus on ten major congested junctions, primarily located on the Outer Ring Road and outskirts of the city. This upgraded system aligns with Bengaluru’s commitment to promoting road safety and sustainable traffic management.

Bengaluru’s dedication to technological advancements is evident in the recent launch of the smart traffic engine ASTraM (Actionable Intelligence for Sustainable Traffic Management). This data-driven solution underlines the city’s emphasis on making informed decisions for addressing traffic challenges and fostering a more efficient and sustainable urban mobility landscape.
