Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway: A 1,316 km Marvel Set to Enhance Connectivity by 2025

NHAI Aims to Complete the 1,316 km Expressway, Halving Travel Time Between Punjab and Gujarat

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is making significant strides toward the completion of the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway, poised to become the country’s second-longest expressway. Spanning an impressive 1,316 kilometers, this ambitious infrastructure project is set to be operational by December 2025. It will connect Amritsar in Punjab to Jamnagar in Gujarat, traversing the deserts of Rajasthan and Haryana.

Unique Desert Route

While the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway remains India’s longest at 1,350 kilometers, the Amritsar-Jamnagar Expressway is remarkable for its extensive route through desert terrain. Approximately 500 kilometers of the expressway will cut through the arid landscapes, linking industrial hubs in Amritsar with those in Gujarat. This direct route promises to facilitate significant economic benefits for businesses and ease the commute for daily travelers.

Halving Travel Time

Currently, the journey from Amritsar to Jamnagar covers 1,516 kilometers and takes around 26 hours. The new expressway will reduce the distance by 216 kilometers, slashing travel time to just 13 hours. Vehicles will be able to travel at speeds of up to 100 kilometers per hour, drastically cutting down on travel costs and time.

Enhanced Connectivity

The expressway is expected to benefit a broad spectrum of regions, including Delhi-NCR, by providing direct connectivity to Punjab, Delhi, Rajasthan, Haryana, and Gujarat. Moreover, it will link to the Delhi-Katra Expressway, offering a smoother passage from Gujarat to Kashmir. This enhanced network of expressways will facilitate easier and more efficient movement across significant northern and western parts of India.

Economic and Regional Impact

Cities along the expressway’s route—such as Amritsar, Bhatinda, Moga, Hanumangarh, Suratgarh, Bikaner, Nagaur, Jodhpur, Barmer, and Jamnagar—are expected to experience a boost in regional economic activities. Improved accessibility and seamless connectivity will likely lead to increased trade, tourism, and overall economic growth in these areas.
