Amarnath Yatra Temporarily Halted on Anniversary of Article 370 Repeal: Safety Remains a Priority

Jammu and Kashmir, India, August 5th, 2023: In a precautionary move on the fourth anniversary of the abrogation of Article 370, officials have decided to temporarily suspend the Amarnath Yatra from the Jammu base camp on Saturday. The decision aims to ensure the safety and security of pilgrims amidst the commemoration of the significant event. Jammu Deputy Commissioner Avny Lavasa has confirmed that the yatra will not be operational on this day.

The previous day witnessed the departure of the 33rd batch of Amarnath Yatris, consisting of 1,181 pilgrims, from the base camp towards the revered cave shrine nestled in the south Kashmir Himalayas. The safety of these pilgrims was ensured through meticulous security arrangements, reflecting the priority placed on safeguarding their well-being.

Since the commencement of the 62-day Yatra in the valley on July 1st, over 4.5 lakh devotees have embarked on the pilgrimage to pay their respects at the holy cave shrine. This pilgrimage holds immense spiritual significance and draws people from various parts of the country.

Given the historical significance of the occasion, security measures have been significantly heightened in the region. August 5th, 2019 marked a significant milestone in the history of Jammu and Kashmir as the Centre repealed the provisions of Article 370 and Article 35A of the Constitution, which had granted special status to the region. This step was followed by the reorganization of the state into Union territories, leading to the establishment of Jammu and Kashmir (with a legislature) and Ladakh.

The suspension of the Amarnath Yatra on the anniversary of these pivotal changes underscores the importance of prioritizing safety and security, especially during periods of potential sensitivity. The decision is indicative of the authorities’ commitment to ensuring the well-being of pilgrims and maintaining a peaceful atmosphere. While the temporary halt may inconvenience some, the focus on security remains paramount, as it allows for the smooth observance of the occasion and the continued practice of religious pilgrimages in the region.
