Alert: Beware of Fake Summons for GST Violations, DGGI Takes Action Against Fraudsters

The Directorate General of GST Intelligence (DGGI), under the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC), has issued a cautionary notice regarding the emergence of fraudulent individuals sending fake summons for GST violations. These fake summons, equipped with a Document Identification Number (DIN), may appear genuine, but the DIN numbers are not issued by DGGI for these entities. In response, DGGI has initiated strong measures, including informing and filing complaints with the police against those involved in generating and distributing these fake and fraudulent summons.

The CBIC had previously issued Circular No. 122/41/2019-GST on November 5, 2019, addressing the generation and quoting of DIN on communications sent by CBIC officers to taxpayers. In order to empower taxpayers to verify the authenticity of any communication, including summons, from the Department, individuals are reminded to use the ‘VERIFY CBIC-DIN’ window on the CBIC’s website or the DIN Utility Search on the online portal of Directorate of Data Management (DDM), CBIC.

For added security, individual taxpayers who receive suspicious or potentially fake summons from DGGI/CBIC formations are encouraged to immediately report them to the concerned jurisdictional DGGI/CBIC office for verification. This proactive step will facilitate necessary actions against those responsible for engaging in fraudulent activities targeting taxpayers.
