Against the Odds: 41 Trapped Workers Safely Evacuated from Uttarkashi’s Silkyari Tunnel

A remarkable and heartening rescue operation unfolded on Tuesday, November 28, as all forty-one workers who were trapped inside the Silkyari tunnel in Uttarakhand since November 12 were successfully rescued. The Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, and Union Minister VK Singh warmly welcomed the rescued workers, adorning them with garlands of orange marigold flowers.

The challenging operation to rescue the workers trapped beyond the 260-meter mark concluded successfully. The workers, who faced a dire situation due to a tunnel collapse between 205 and 260 meters from the Silkyara side, were evacuated through a 57-meter steel pipe. Equipped with stretchers fitted with wheels, the workers emerged safely from the tunnel.

Expressing relief and joy, President Droupadi Murmu acknowledged the endurance of the workers during their 17-day ordeal and the challenges faced during the rescue operation. In a statement, President Murmu conveyed her gratitude to the workers who played a crucial role in constructing vital infrastructure, often at significant personal risk and far from their homes.

President Murmu also extended congratulations to the dedicated teams and experts who displayed remarkable grit and determination throughout one of the most challenging rescue missions in history.
