The Indian Space and Research Organisation (ISRO) has set its sights on a significant milestone as the Aditya-L1 spacecraft, India’s maiden solar mission, steers its course towards Lagrange Point 1 (L1). Maiden Solar Mission
Aditya-L1 represents India’s inaugural solar mission and was launched by ISRO on September 2, 2023, from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The primary objective of this mission is to comprehensively study the sun’s outer atmosphere, a task that requires the deployment of seven distinct payloads designed for this specific purpose.
Distance and Orbit
Aditya-L1 is destined for a halo orbit encircling Lagrange Point 1 (L1), which lies approximately 1.5 million kilometers away from Earth in the direction of the sun. Covering this vast distance is projected to take four months, with Aditya-L1 settling at an approximate distance of 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, all while remaining oriented towards the Sun.
Gaganyan Mission
In addition to the Aditya-L1 mission, ISRO Chief S Somnath also provided updates on the Gaganyan mission. The Test Vehicle-D1 mission is scheduled for October 21 and holds the key to demonstrating the crew escape system’s functionality in the transonic condition. The overarching goal of the Gaganyan mission is to exhibit India’s capabilities in human spaceflight, achieved by launching a crew of three members into a 400-kilometer orbit for a three-day mission.
