Google is rolling out an update to its native calling app, Phone by Google, bringing a fresh visual enhancement. The latest update replaces the traditional black status bar with a transparent one, integrating seamlessly with your phone’s Dynamic Color theme.
Key Changes in the Update
Previously, the Google Phone app displayed a dark black status bar during calls or while using the app. The new update introduces Dynamic Color to the app, significantly improving the screen appearance by removing the odd horizontal line that separated the status bar from the rest of the screen. This change not only modernizes the app’s look but also ensures a more cohesive and visually appealing interface.
Compatibility and Rollout
The transparent status bar feature is not exclusive to devices running Android 15. Users with phones on Android 14 have also reported noticing this change. The feature was initially introduced with version 128 of the app, released in late April, which also included the addition of the Audio Emoji feature.
Enhanced User Experience
This update aligns with Google’s broader design philosophy. Apps targeting API level 35 are designed to display edge-to-edge by default on Android 15 devices. An internal Google user study revealed that users significantly prefer edge-to-edge screens, as they provide a “more satisfying and premium” experience. This preference has driven the design changes in the Google Phone app, aiming to deliver a more polished and immersive user experience.
