Water Crisis Looms Over Igatpuri Taluka as Reservoir Levels Plunge

The Igatpuri taluka, renowned for its abundant rainfall and reservoirs, is grappling with an impending water crisis due to a rapid depletion of water levels in its seven major reservoirs. Despite being filled to capacity in October 2023, the Darna and Bhavli reservoirs are now reporting alarming water levels, with only 43% and 32% remaining, respectively. The situation has raised significant concerns about water availability for both irrigation and daily needs in the region.

Water Supply Challenges: The Igatpuri taluka, a crucial water source for regions such as Marathwada, Thane district, Mumbai, Ahmednagar, and Nashik, is currently facing challenges due to the diversion of water from the Bhavli reservoir to Shahapur. This diversion has further strained the water supply for Igatpuri, prompting questions about the allocation of water to Shahapur and the necessary measures to sustain water availability in the taluka.

Impact of Rainfall Discrepancies: The situation is a stark contrast to 2022 when widespread and beneficial rainfall across the state led to the filling of most reservoirs, including the Jayakwadi reservoir in Marathwada. During that time, there was no need for water diversion from Igatpuri taluka’s reservoirs. However, the reduced rainfall in 2023 resulted in a shortfall, particularly in Marathwada. This triggered the diversion of water from the Jayakwadi reservoir, directly impacting the water supply in Igatpuri taluka.

As the region grapples with these challenges, authorities are now compelled to strategize and implement measures to address the water crisis and ensure sustainable water supply for agriculture and daily consumption in Igatpuri.
