Water Crisis in Marathwada: Breweries Face Potential Supply Cut Amid Dwindling Resources

Authorities Weighing Options to Prioritize Water Use in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar

In response to the ongoing water crisis in Marathwada, authorities are considering imposing restrictions on water supply to breweries in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar if necessary, as highlighted in an official statement. With inadequate rainfall affecting water availability, concerns have been raised about the sustainability of current consumption patterns, particularly in industries reliant on water resources.

Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the neighboring Jalna district primarily rely on water from the Jayakwadi dam’s Nath Sagar reservoir, which caters to both residential and industrial needs. The potential restriction on water supply to breweries, if implemented, could have significant implications for the region’s industrial landscape.

Twelve breweries in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar contribute substantially to the production of liquor and beer, with their operations collectively generating significant revenue for the state government. However, the current water crisis has prompted authorities to reassess priorities and allocate resources judiciously.

Addressing concerns about water availability, Collector Dilip Swami reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring access to drinking water for residents as the foremost priority. However, he acknowledged the possibility of reducing water supply to breweries should demand exceed available resources.

The situation underscores the delicate balance between industrial needs and essential requirements, emphasizing the critical importance of effective water resource management strategies in mitigating the impact of the ongoing crisis.
