Victory for Punawale: PCMC’s Punawale Garbage Depot Project Officially Scrapped

In a significant turn of events, the proposed Solid Waste Management (SWM) project in Punawale by the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has been officially halted, bringing relief to Punawale residents, activists, and various stakeholders who vehemently opposed the project. The announcement came today during the winter session of the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, with Minister Uday Samant declaring the cancellation of the SWM garbage depot.

A Hard-Won Victory

The cancellation of the SWM project is hailed as a victory for Punawale residents, the Pimpri Chinchwad Housing Society Federation, and individuals who actively participated in the campaign against the project. The decision, met with jubilation, follows extensive efforts to address concerns related to health risks, environmental impact, and the proximity of the proposed SWM site to residential areas.

Minister Samant’s Announcement

Addressing the assembly, Minister Uday Samant stated, “Considering the concerns of the people and the increased urbanization in Punawale, the SWM project is now cancelled. We will explore alternative options.” The announcement reflects a shift in priorities, taking into account the growing population and the need for a more sustainable waste management solution.

Community Efforts and Protests

The victory is attributed to the collective efforts of Punawale residents, activists, MLA Ashwini Laxman Jagtap, and other leaders who actively voiced their dissent against the SWM project. Various forms of protests, including a ‘Silent’ Bell Ringing Protest and a bike rally with a chipko movement, played a crucial role in raising awareness about the potential risks associated with the project.

Political Support and Expressions of Relief

MLA Ashwini Jagtap, who consistently raised health concerns during legislative assembly sessions, expressed relief at the cancellation. Political leaders, including Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and MP Shrirang Barne, had assured Punawale residents of their support in the fight against the SWM project. The Pimpri Chinchwad Housing Society Federation extended gratitude to Minister Samant and Chief Minister Eknath Shinde for their role in resolving the issue.
