UNESCO Nomination: Maharashtra’s Historic Forts of Shivaji’s Era

In a significant move to preserve and celebrate Maharashtra’s rich heritage, the state government has proposed twelve forts from the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj-era for UNESCO World Heritage Site status. Finance Minister Ajit Pawar announced this ambitious initiative during the recent budget announcement, emphasizing the historical and strategic importance of these forts.

Proposed Heritage: Maratha Military Landscapes of India

The forts, including prominent names like Salher, Shivneri, Lohagad, Raigad, and Rajgad, among others, are part of the proposed ‘Maratha Military Landscapes of India’ nomination for the year 2024-25. This collective nomination aims to highlight the exceptional fortification and military systems envisioned and executed by the Maratha rulers between the 17th and 19th centuries.

Cultural and Historical Significance

According to the culture ministry’s press release, these forts span diverse geographical and physiographic regions, showcasing the Maratha Empire’s strategic military prowess. The nomination underscores their historical significance in shaping the region’s cultural and architectural landscape during that era.

Additional Nominations and Cultural Contributions

Alongside the forts, Maharashtra has also proposed the Katal Shilpa (petroglyph and rock art site) in the Konkan region for UNESCO recognition. Finance Minister Ajit Pawar highlighted during the budget speech that proposals have been submitted for other cultural events like the Pandharpur Wari, Dahi Handi Utsav, and Ganeshotsav, aiming to enrich UNESCO’s cultural heritage list.

Current UNESCO Status in Maharashtra

Currently, Maharashtra boasts six UNESCO World Heritage Sites, including iconic cultural landmarks such as the Ajanta Caves, Ellora Caves, and the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, as well as natural treasures like the Western Ghats. The addition of the ‘Maratha Military Landscapes of India’ would further enhance Maharashtra’s cultural legacy on the global stage.
