State-of-the-Art Security: 2,394 CCTV Cameras Enhance Surveillance in Maharashtra’s High-Density Jails

In a major initiative to fortify security and enhance surveillance, the Maharashtra state prison department has successfully installed 2,394 advanced CCTV cameras across six heavily congested jails, including the prominent Arthur Road and Yerawada in Pune. This strategic move aims to strengthen security measures, prevent crime, and address disputes within the prison facilities. The ambitious CCTV project, valued at Rs 50 crore, is part of the state government’s commitment to modernize prison infrastructure.

Comprehensive Security Upgrade:

The six jails that have undergone this security enhancement include Arthur Road and Yerawada, along with facilities in Byculla, Kalyan, Amravati, and Nagpur. Close to 3,822 additional CCTV cameras are slated for installation in 10 other jails, encompassing locations such as Thane, Taloja, and Nashik, with completion expected by March-end. Future plans include extending the CCTV coverage to 44 jails across the state in 2025.

Government Funding and Inauguration:

The CCTV project, a significant investment at Rs 50 crore, is fully funded by the state government. Radhika Rastogi, Principal Secretary (Appeals & Security) of the state home department, inaugurated the newly established CCTV control room at Yerawada central jail. The control room is now linked to 812 cameras, marking a milestone in the state’s commitment to prison security.

Enhanced Surveillance and Benefits:

Amitabh Gupta, Additional Director General (Prisons), highlighted the positive impact of the installed cameras, stating that they would significantly contribute to improving surveillance, preventing crimes, and handling disputes within the prison system. The CCTV system will also play a crucial role in verifying inmate complaints against jail personnel, ensuring transparency and accountability.

Correctional Emphasis and Human Treatment:

Jalindar Supekar, Special Inspector General (Prisons), emphasized a shift in focus towards human intelligence, surprise checks, and frisking inmates. The prisons department is actively promoting a more humane approach, providing inmates with space to engage in skill-building activities. The aim is to create an environment that resembles a progressive society within the prison facilities.
