Satara Jail Sets Milestone with E-shram and Ayushman Bharat Cards for Inmates

Satara District Jail has made history by becoming the first correctional facility in India to provide inmates with E-shram and Ayushman Bharat cards, marking a significant step towards improving inmate welfare and rehabilitation efforts. The initiatives were inaugurated by Amitabh Gupta, Additional Director General of Police, Prisons Department, Maharashtra, during his recent visit to the jail premises, accompanied by other dignitaries including Satara District Superintendent of Police Sameer Shaikh and Jail Superintendent Shamkant Shedge.

The introduction of these pioneering programs reflects a concerted effort to modernize correctional facilities and enhance the well-being of inmates. Here are some key highlights of the initiatives and schemes launched at Satara District Jail:

  1. Online Interview Room: In a bid to facilitate easier communication between inmates and their families, an e-interview room equipped with video conferencing facilities was inaugurated. This initiative enables inmates to interact with their relatives through virtual meetings, fostering better connections despite physical confinement.
  2. Ayushman Bharat Card: A total of 71 inmates were issued Ayushman Bharat cards, entitling them and their families to free medical treatment up to Rs 5 lakh post-release from prison. This initiative aims to address the healthcare needs of inmates and promote their well-being beyond incarceration.
  3. E-Shram Card: E-Shram cards were issued to 10 prisoners, providing them with insurance coverage of up to Rs 1 lakh in case of work-related accidents post-release. Additionally, families of inmates can receive financial assistance of up to Rs 2 lakh in case of accidental death, ensuring support during unforeseen circumstances.
  4. Health Camps: Several health camps, including skin and eye check-ups, were organized within the jail premises in collaboration with the Samata Foundation. Inmates received medical treatment, including free consultations and distribution of spectacles, contributing to their overall health and well-being.
  5. Cultural and Recreational Activities: The distribution of bhajan materials and sports equipment aims to engage inmates in cultural and recreational pursuits, diverting their focus from negative influences and promoting holistic rehabilitation.

The initiatives spearheaded by Amitabh Gupta underscore a progressive approach towards inmate rehabilitation and reformation. By providing essential services, facilities, and concessions, the Prisons Department aims to foster a conducive environment for the holistic development of inmates, paving the way for their successful reintegration into society.
