Satara Jail Enhances Facilities with New Kitchen Setup

A new kitchen facility has been inaugurated at Satara District Jail, marking a significant enhancement in the infrastructure aimed at improving the living conditions of inmates. The initiative, funded by the District Planning Committee, was unveiled by MLA Chhatrapati Shivendrasinhraje Bhosle and Swati Sathe, Deputy Inspector General of Jails, Pune Division.

Satara District Jail, currently accommodating around 350 male and female prisoners despite an official capacity of 168, has been grappling with overcrowding issues. The completion of the new kitchen stands as a testament to efforts to address the evolving needs of the prison population.

MLA Chhatrapati Shivendrasinharaje Bhosale emphasized the importance of bolstering security measures and relieving pressure on the existing facility by establishing a new central jail away from the city center. Swati Sathe echoed these sentiments, advocating for the establishment of a central jail to alleviate overcrowding concerns in neighboring detention centers.

The recent International Women’s Day saw a philanthropic gesture from Sangita Patil, President of Innerwheel Club Panchgani, and her team, who donated a new sewing machine to female inmates at Satara District Jail. Additionally, they provided training in sewing various items, empowering the women with vocational skills.

The inauguration ceremony also included an inspection of other aspects of the jail, including the newly introduced “kiosk system” for inmates and measures to enhance security and beautification. Superintendent of Jails Shemkant Shedge and his team were commended for their diligent efforts in managing these initiatives effectively.
