Pune: Lonavala Records Over 100 MM of Rainfall in 24 Hours; IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Tomorrow

Pune experienced a refreshing start to the weekend as heavy rainfall graced the city on Saturday morning, bringing much-needed relief after an extended dry spell. This significant precipitation has also contributed to a notable rise in water levels in various dams across the region. Notably, Lonavala and Chinchwad were among the areas that witnessed exceptionally heavy rainfall over the last few hours.

According to data from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Lonavala recorded an impressive 105 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, while Chinchwad received 83.5 mm of rainfall. The Hadapsar locality, along with its adjoining areas, also experienced substantial rainfall, with IMD registering 54 mm of rainfall at Magarpatta. Additionally, Tamhini Ghat reported 35 mm of rainfall, while Lohegaon received 31.8 mm of rainfall by 9 am on Saturday morning. Weather officials have indicated that the ghat regions can expect heavy rainfall in the coming days.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for Sunday, forecasting “thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (30 to 40 kmph) at one or two places.” This advisory serves as a cautionary measure for residents and authorities to remain vigilant and prepared for potential weather-related developments.

This sudden influx of rainfall is a welcome change for Pune and the surrounding areas, as it brings respite from the dry conditions and helps replenish water sources. However, it also underscores the need for proper drainage and flood management strategies, especially in regions susceptible to heavy downpours, to ensure the safety and well-being of residents.
