Pune: In a striking revelation, more than 10 lakh job seekers, including individuals with MBA degrees, engineering qualifications, and even PhDs, have submitted applications for 4,600 ‘talathi’ positions in Maharashtra, as confirmed by a senior official from the land records department on Wednesday.
A ‘talathi’ holds a pivotal role within the revenue department, responsible for various tasks such as maintaining village accounts related to land revenue collection, recording rights information, adhering to government-mandated village forms, surveying crops and boundary markers, and compiling agricultural statistics.
These ‘talathis’ fall under the Class C employment category and receive monthly remuneration ranging from Rs 25,500 to Rs 81,100.
Anand Rayate, the coordinator of state examinations and additional director of land records, disclosed that a staggering count of 1.053 million applications has flooded in for the 4,600 vacant ‘talathi’ positions.
“The examination will be held at multiple centers across districts in the state from August 17 to September 14, with three shifts each day,” he stated.
Although the eligibility criterion permits any graduate to apply for the position, Rayate noted that the applications include candidates with diverse qualifications such as MBA, PhD, BAMS, BHMS, and engineering degrees.
As outlined in the government notification, the exam will be conducted in three 2-hour sessions daily, spanning from 9 am to 11 am, 12:30 pm to 2:30 pm, and 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm. This overwhelming response from highly qualified individuals underscores the competitive nature of the job market in Maharashtra.
