New Species Of Butterfly Emerges in the Clouds: “Cigaritis Meghamalaiensis” Discovered in the Western Ghats

In a remarkable discovery, a new species of butterfly has been identified in the Western Ghats mountain range, specifically in the Megamalai division of Srivilliputhur Megamalai Tiger Reserve. The butterfly, named “Cigaritis Meghamalaiensis,” pays homage to the region’s cloud-kissed landscapes. This find marks the first addition to the butterfly species list in the Western Ghats in 33 years, elevating the total count to 337 species.

IAS officer Supriya Sahu shared the news on social media, emphasizing the importance of this rare find. Researchers, led by Dr. Kalesh Sadasivam, Thiru Ramasamy Kamaya, and Dr. C.P. Rajkumar from the NGO Vanam based in Theni, spearheaded the effort, shedding light on the ecological richness of the region.

Commenting on the discovery, one user expressed joy, saying, “Blue butterflies are rare, and when they appear, they point you toward joy.” Another welcomed the butterfly to Tamil Nadu, hoping it would flourish in the state.

Dr. Kalesh Sadasivan, a naturalist involved in the discovery, highlighted a distinctive feature of the butterfly, stating, “The discal and post-discal bands on the underside of the forewing…is a unique feature that distinguishes the new species.”

Dr. CP Rajkumar, founder of Vanam Trust, emphasized the importance of such discoveries, noting that it underscores the potential existence of undiscovered species seeking refuge in ecologically sensitive areas.
