A minor earthquake registering a magnitude of 3.4 on the Richter scale struck the region of Kolhapur in Maharashtra on Wednesday, as reported by the National Center for Seismology (NCS). The seismic event occurred at a depth of 5 kilometers below the surface.

The tremors were precisely recorded at 06:45:05 Indian Standard Time (IST), marking the moment when local residents felt the ground movement. The NCS highlighted that the epicenter of the earthquake was situated at a depth of 5 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface.

An official statement from the NCS’s verified Twitter account provided the following details: “Earthquake of Magnitude: 3.4, Occurred on 16-08-2023, 06:45:05 IST, Latitude: 17.19 & Longitude: 73.79, Depth: 5 Km, Location: Kolhapur, Maharashtra, India.”

While additional information is still awaited, it’s worth noting that this recent incident follows a similar seismic event. On August 11, an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.3 on the Richter scale struck an area located 112 kilometers SSE of Port Blair in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The NCS reported that this previous earthquake had a depth of 10 kilometers beneath the surface, and its tremors were felt at 02:56:12 IST.
