Maratha Reservation: Committee’s Quest for Kunbi Records to Issue Caste Certificates

Maharashtra Rains

In a significant move aimed at facilitating Maratha-Kunbi and Kunbi-Maratha caste certificates, a district-level committee convened as per the directives of Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The committee’s meeting, presided over by Collector Dr. Rajesh Deshmukh, focused on the critical task of acquiring evidence to support these certificates for members of the Maratha community.

The meeting brought together key officials, including District Superintendent of Police Ankit Goyal, Zilla Parishad Chief Executive Officer Ramesh Chavan, Resident Deputy Collector Jyoti Kadam, and representatives from various departments such as the Municipal Corporation, Cooperative Department, and Archaeology Department.

A crucial aspect highlighted during the meeting was the pressing need to search for Kunbi records within the district. Given that many of these records are written in the Modi script, the committee intends to collaborate with trained experts from the Archives Directorate to ensure the accuracy of the documents. This verification process encompasses the examination of 13 distinct types of documents, a vital step in the certificate issuance process.

Collector Dr. Deshmukh shared a noteworthy update regarding the progress made in this initiative. Over the past 10 months, a substantial number of individuals, specifically 12,294, who possessed Kunbi records, have already received their caste certificates. Out of the total 12,911 applications received, 460 are currently pending, while 157 have unfortunately been rejected.

Additionally, the committee is actively considering revenue records predating 1967, further indicating the commitment to advance this initiative. Dr. Deshmukh reaffirmed that the proceedings in this matter are ongoing, emphasizing the significance of this endeavor.
