Maharashtra Witnesses Surge in Voter Registrations Ahead of Lok Sabha Polls

Maharashtra has experienced a substantial increase in voter registrations as it gears up for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. With the inclusion of almost six lakh new voters in February, state election officials have indicated that an additional two lakh registrations are in the pipeline.

Addressing Voter Registration Surge Ahead of LS Polls

The state has witnessed an impressive response to the ongoing voter registration drive, with over eight lakh applications submitted for new voter registrations across Maharashtra. District offices have successfully processed 5.73 lakh of these applications, emphasizing the enthusiasm among citizens to exercise their democratic rights.

Streamlining Voter Registration Processes

In response to the significant influx of applications, election officials have prioritized the processing of these registrations to ensure timely completion. A total of 14.71 lakh applications for voter registration, deletion, and address changes were received in the month of February, with 9.84 lakh applications already approved across all categories.

Voter List Purification Initiatives

The state election machinery is actively engaged in initiatives to purify the voter list by removing duplicate names and updating records. A total of 1.87 lakh applications were received for the removal of voter names, of which 1.04 lakh have been approved. The Election Commission of India (ECI) has instructed all states, including Maharashtra, to enhance voter registration accuracy and eliminate discrepancies.

Transparent Process and Upcoming Deadlines

The Chief Election Officer of Maharashtra assures that all applications are being processed within the stipulated time frames, showcasing the commitment to a transparent and efficient electoral process. With the legal procedure taking seven days, authorities anticipate completing the processing of all forms approximately one week before the nomination deadline.

Anticipating Further Registrations and Upcoming Deadlines

As the state continues to witness a surge in voter registrations, election officials expect an additional two lakh applications to be processed shortly. The Election Commission has communicated the importance of ensuring an accurate voter list and has outlined measures to remove duplicate and deceased voters’ names.
