Maharashtra Resident Doctors Launch Indefinite Strike, Emergency Services Unaffected

The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) has declared a statewide indefinite strike, effective from 5 pm today, with the aim of drawing attention to unmet promises and addressing the concerns of resident doctors across Maharashtra. Despite being on the frontline of tertiary healthcare, resident doctors express deep disappointment with the government’s indifference towards their concerns.

In a statement, MARD stated, “The mistreatment we face is undeniably harsh, and despite constructive engagement with authorities and assurances on February 7, 2024, the commitments made to address our genuine concerns remain unfulfilled even after two weeks.”

The promises, including immediate funds for hostel repairs and construction, regularization of stipend payments with the release of pending stipends and arrears, and a 10,000 stipend hike, were made in a meeting by Hon. Deputy CM Ajit Dada Pawar and Hon. Minister of Medical Education Hasan Mushrif. However, the delay in executing these commitments has led to the decisive action of a statewide indefinite strike.

Commencing on February 22, 2024, at 5:00 PM, the Pan Maharashtra Indefinite Strike is an effort by BJMC MARD, in solidarity with Central MARD. Emergency duties will be maintained during the strike period to ensure essential healthcare services continue.

MARD emphasizes, “Patient care is our utmost priority, and it is with a deep sense of responsibility that we take this step. Our intention is not to disrupt services but to ensure that the authorities fulfil their obligations towards resident doctors, who are the backbone of the healthcare system.”

The association urges the government to act swiftly and earnestly to address their demands within the stipulated timeframe. Failure to do so will leave them with no option but to continue the strike until justice is served. They remain hopeful for a prompt and positive resolution from the Government.
