Maharashtra Health Department’s Guidelines for Combating Air Pollution in Pune

In response to the rising levels of air pollution in Pune, the Public Health Department of the Government of Maharashtra has issued crucial guidelines and preventive measures to safeguard the health of its citizens. With the Air Quality Index (AQI) indicating moderate to poor air quality in most cities of Maharashtra, it is essential for residents to take necessary precautions to mitigate the effects of air pollution.

The directive underscores the significance of immediate action, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and individuals with preexisting health conditions. To combat the harmful effects of air pollution, citizens are advised to adopt the following measures:

  1. Use of Face Masks and Air Purifiers: Wearing N95 and N99 face masks is strongly recommended for children, the elderly, individuals with health conditions, and those exposed to high pollution levels. Additionally, the use of air purifiers with regular filter maintenance helps improve indoor air quality.
  2. Limit Outdoor Activities: On days with poor air quality, it is advisable to reduce outdoor activities, particularly in the morning and late evening, to minimize exposure to pollutants.

The directive also outlines a comprehensive set of preventive measures for individuals to follow, such as:

  • Diet and Hydration: Maintaining a diet rich in antioxidants from fruits and vegetables while staying well-hydrated can help the body cope with the effects of pollution.
  • Avoiding High-Pollution Areas: Staying away from locations with high pollution levels, such as industrial areas and construction sites, is crucial to reduce exposure.
  • Proper Ventilation: Keeping doors and windows closed during times of high pollution, especially in the morning and evening, can prevent indoor air contamination.
  • Clean Cooking Practices: Using clean, smokeless fuels like gas or electricity for cooking is recommended. For biomass users, employing clean stoves is essential.
  • Fire Prevention: Refraining from burning organic materials, fireworks, and open burning of wood, leaves, crop residues, and garbage can help reduce air pollution.
  • Tobacco and Incense: Avoiding cigarettes, tobacco products, mosquito coils, and incense sticks indoors is crucial to maintain indoor air quality.
  • Health Monitoring: Individuals experiencing symptoms such as shortness of breath, cough, chest discomfort, or eye irritation should seek immediate medical attention.

The health department emphasizes that these measures are imperative to combat the adverse effects of air pollution on respiratory and overall health. The use of face masks and air purifiers, in conjunction with responsible lifestyle choices, can significantly reduce health risks associated with poor air quality.
