Local Backlash and Administrative Action: The Story Behind Demolition in Mahabaleshwar & Panchgani

In a recent crackdown, the Satara district administration has taken decisive measures to dismantle unauthorized commercial buildings in Mahabaleshwar, Panchgani, and surrounding villages. The initiative aims to curb illegal constructions in environmentally sensitive areas, enforcing construction restrictions mandated by the Forest Act.

Over the past few days, heavy machinery has been employed to raze six or seven large structures, primarily commercial establishments. Despite existing regulations, numerous illicit constructions have emerged over decades in the picturesque villages and hill stations. A similar effort by the district administration occurred in October of the previous year, where developers were issued notices to cease construction voluntarily or face consequences.

According to the district collector, the region, akin to Joshimath in Uttarakhand, is susceptible to natural disasters. Building on hillsides poses inherent risks, prompting the administration’s proactive measures to prevent unauthorized constructions. Developers have been given a one-month grace period to voluntarily demolish remaining unauthorized structures; failing compliance, FIRs will be filed.

Local sentiments have been stirred, especially as many developers hail from affluent backgrounds in cities like Mumbai. The majority of these constructions, catering to the tourism industry, include hotels and resorts. Villagers, who often sell land to these developers, are also expressing dissatisfaction with the ongoing trend.

Satara district’s chief minister, Eknath Shinde, previously urged the administration to spare illegal constructions. The current move is seen as a stern response to uphold environmental integrity and safeguard against potential natural calamities.
