Unifying Four Flight Information Regions Promises Enhanced Safety and Efficiency

India is gearing up for a monumental shift in its aviation management strategy with a plan to consolidate control of its entire airspace from the city of Nagpur. This ambitious move aims to merge the four Flight Information Regions (FIRs) currently spread across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Chennai into one continuous airspace, all managed from Nagpur. The decision is poised to revolutionize air traffic management (ATM) in the region, promising a slew of benefits including improved safety measures, reduced carbon footprint, minimized separations between flights, and more fuel-efficient flight paths for aircraft.

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has initiated the process by commissioning a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the Indian Single Sky Harmonized ATM (ISHAN) at Nagpur. The comprehensive study aims to evaluate available technologies, both domestic and international, to facilitate the seamless transition and efficient management of India’s vast airspace. With control over 2.8 million square nautical miles of airspace, India holds a significant position as a key air navigation service provider in the Asia-Pacific region.

According to insights gleaned from the DPR, the integration of the FIRs into a single continuum in Nagpur is expected to yield numerous benefits. These include enhanced safety measures, increased operational efficiency, heightened user satisfaction, reduced carbon emissions, and optimal utilization of manpower resources. To achieve the most efficient utilization of airspace capacity, a holistic restructuring of airspace route structures and sector boundaries is deemed necessary.

The implementation of Single Sky Harmonized ATM at Nagpur is envisioned as a strategic move to address various challenges faced by India’s airspace management, including safety, airspace capacity, airport constraints, resource management, and environmental concerns. The initiative will leverage cutting-edge technologies, automation, and remote facilities to provide seamless, cost-effective, and customer-centric airspace management.

The selection of Nagpur as the central hub for airspace control underscores its strategic importance in meeting the challenges of automation and emerging technologies. The project also marks a significant milestone in India’s journey towards developing a sophisticated and efficient airspace and ATM infrastructure.
