Indian Navy Day Celebrations Prompt Pause in Tarkarli’s Tourist Hub

The Sindhudurg District administration has recently announced a temporary closure of water sports activities and tourist visits to the iconic Sindhudurg Fort. This decision, effective from November 28, 2023, to December 5, 2023, is in anticipation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to commemorate Indian Navy Day.

Heightened Security Measures for a Historic Occasion

The Sindhudurg Fort, situated in the Arabian Sea off the Malvan coast in Maharashtra, stands as a testament to historical significance and architectural brilliance. Built by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the fort has long been a favorite among tourists, attracting visitors year-round.

To ensure the safety and seamless execution of Prime Minister Modi’s visit, authorities have taken the precautionary step of temporarily restricting water-related activities and transportation to the fort. This encompasses the suspension of boat rides, water sports, and recreational activities in the vicinity.

Local tour operators, boat owners, and stakeholders associated with providing services to tourists visiting Sindhudurg Fort have been duly informed about the temporary ban. The aim is to prevent potential security concerns and facilitate a hassle-free visit by the Prime Minister.

Security Measures and Coastal Surveillance

During this restricted period, security measures will be significantly heightened, with increased surveillance and monitoring of the coastal areas surrounding Sindhudurg Fort. The decision is a proactive measure to ensure the safety of both the Prime Minister and the visiting tourists.

Instructions regarding these security measures have been communicated to the Sindhudurg Police administration, with a mandate to submit a detailed report on the implementation of orders to the district administration.

Impact on Local Businesses and Tourism

Nitin Kanse, a local hotelier from Devbag, expressed his thoughts on the situation. He emphasized the significance of the event to the region but acknowledged the impact on tourism businesses. With no hotel bookings made for the week due to the suspension of activities, areas like Tarkarli, Devbag, and Malvan, known for their water sports, find themselves in a temporary lull.
